Weston-super-Mare residents: 'We need our local pub, not another Tesco'
Supermarket giant Tesco could soon set up shop on the site of an empty pub in Weston-super-Mare.
The retailer confirmed this week it has held initial discussions with Enterprise Inns who own the Bristol House at Milton Road about the possibility of taking over the site for a Tesco Express.
The pub, which has been part of the local community since the 1930s, closed last week, much to the disappointment of its band of locals.
A spokeswoman for Tesco said: "We have had initial discussions with Enterprise Inns but as yet no lease has been agreed for the site.
"It is likely that any store would be a Tesco Express.
"As there have only been initial discussions we have no further detail."
Residents living in the area say they are angry that their local pub has closed and say there is no need for a Tesco when there are already three convenience stores nearby. People are now considering whether to launch a petition to fight off any moves by Tesco to set up shop on the site.
Resident Mark Thyer said the pub was a focal point for the local community, especially for elderly people who could walk there.
Mr Thyer, 57, said: "A lot of older people rely on the pub as a place to socialise and there is no other pub in walking distance for them.
"If they can't go there and have a chat with their friends, where are they going to go?
"Making the pub into a Tesco store will just isolate the community from one another and mean that anyone who wants to go for a drink will either have to drive or get a taxi.
"There are three convenience stores in the same area and I cannot see there is a need for a Tesco here.
"Other local shops in the vicinity, like the local butchers, are also going to suffer if a Tesco opens."
Mr Thyer, a salesman, added: "Milton Road is also very busy and there have already been a number of serious and fatal accidents along here.
"An additional supermarket will only increase the amount of traffic and make the road even more dangerous.
"People around here are very concerned about a Tesco store being built on the site and consideration is already being given to getting a petition together to object to any change of use planning application."
There is already a large Tesco supermarket in the town centre plus several Tesco Express shops across the resort, including on The Broadway, Boulevard and at Locking Castle.
Local businessman Nigel Parker, 50, runs three Good Days News stores in Weston with his brothers Tony and Adrian – including one just a few hundred metres away from the Bristol House pub.
Mr Parker said: "If Tesco opened on Milton Road it would have a devastating effect on our business which has served the community for over 20 years, long before Tesco considered coming here.
"We have a lot of regular and loyal customers who we wish to continue serving.
"Although we would not want to alienate them from using other stores, if we were forced to close, so would the services which we currently offer such as bill payments, paper deliveries and home deliveries for our older customers which Tesco does not offer."
A spokesman for Enterprise Inns said: "Following the departure of the publicans this week we are reviewing our options for the pub."

SimplyHired bases its ranking on the number of tech job openings compared to the number of people who are working in the region. The numbers below are based on metropolitan areas as defined by the U.S. census bureau.
1. Baltimore, Maryland (46,150 people employed, 14,093 tech job openings): Hunter Sherman, the chief engineer at Sparks, Maryland-based BizBrag, Inc., said the company is struggling to find qualified people to fill its jobs. As a result, BizBrag is planning to move. ?A big part of our issue is that we're just north of the city, and a majority of the engineers are located to the south, closer to the D.C. area,? Sherman said. ?This is one of the major reasons that we plan on moving our business into the city in the coming months.?
2. Detroit, Michigan (15,930 people employed, 3,387 tech job openings): State government efforts to remake the region's traditional vehicle-manufacturing economy are paying off, according to Todd Albery, CEO of Quizzle, a consumer-credit Website based in Detroit. Several tech companies have formed an umbrella organization called Rock Ventures to address the shortage of tech talent in Detroit. In addition to actively recruiting laid-off Silicon Valley workers from Yahoo and other companies, Rock Ventures helped place 500 summer interns and brought them to the region.
3. Charlotte, North Carolina (24,900 people employed, 5,228 tech job openings): Several small tech companies have joined Red Ventures, Lowes Hardware, Ally, American City Business Journals, and Bank of America in North Carolina's Research Triangle. They're all constantly on the lookout for tech talent. Local governments have formed business incubators and networking groups. Despite efforts to attract outside talent, the area remains a job-seeker's market.
4. Portland, Oregon (28, 630 people employed, 5,934 tech job openings): Investor Michael Pachos put his money into an undisclosed, 90-employee company in Vancouver, Wash., which is part of the Portland metro area. ?There is a strong semiconductor base around the area due to Intel, plus the lower cost of living attracts many people from Los Angeles and San Francisco,? Pachos said. ?Once people are locked into a cheaper lifestyle and lower salary, it's difficult for them to move back to an expensive city. The variety of outdoor activities also draws a lot of people.?
5. Seattle, Washington (93,620 people employed, 18,011 tech job openings): Concur is the latest company to proclaim its faith in Seattle's perennial tech hotbed. Next spring, the company will move its 600-employee headquarters to Bellevue, which Concur President and COO Raj Singh called a ?place with a great innovation economy and some of the best engineers and high-tech talent in the world.? He chose Bellevue also for its central role the greater Seattle area, solid transportation options and other nearby amenities.

LIFEBOAT crews are urging people to be careful on the beach after being called to rescue two groups of people stranded by the tide at the same spot.
Portishead Lifeboat crew members were called out to help five children on a sandbank near Clevedon's Marine Lake on Saturday.
A member of the public alerted the coastguard who contacted Portishead Sailing Club, whose members were already in the channel as part of a day of activities in support of the British Olympic Sailing Team.
Clevedon Coastguard mud rescue teams were put on standby and the coastguard helicopter was also scrambled.
Two of the children, who were aged between eight and 13, made their own way back to the shore but members of the sailing club rescued the other three children before handing them over to the Portishead lifeboat crew.
Two days later a group of nine adults had to be rescued after becoming cut off by the tide while playing cricket on a sand bar about 100 metres away from the Marine Lake.
A Weston-super-Mare RNLI crew arrived at the scene 10 minutes after being called and took the cricketers to Clevedon Pier, where they were met by coastguard staff.
Weston-super-Mare RNLI spokesman Glyn Hayes said: "They had not realised the speed with which the Bristol Channel tides can rise.
"The water level was rising rapidly and they would soon have been in serious trouble."
On their way back to their Birnbeck Island base, the crew diverted to pick up three swimmers in the water at the mouth of the River Axe.
Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat Trust crews are called out dozens of times each year to similar incidents.
Trust spokesman Dave Herbert said: "With the good weather we have been having, people want to go out and enjoy the coast.
"The area is particularly busy during times like summer when children are on holiday from school.
"We are often called out, along with the other emergency services, to rescue people who run into trouble along the coastline.
"However tempting it may be for people to get into the water or walk onto the sandy areas, they need to make sure they are aware of the tides. The Severn Estuary has the second highest rise and fall of tide in the world and it is unforgiving when it comes in – it is not going to stop.
"We want people to enjoy the coastline but stay safe at the same time.
"There are safety signs along the beach and people need to make sure they read them and adhere to them."
