Charity aims to give older people greater support
LOCAL charity Age UK Bristol has appointed a new chairman.
The former chief executive for the NHS in Wiltshire and Somerset, Alan Carpenter, has taken on the role.
He takes over from Andrew Young, who achieved a great deal in his four years as chair but died recently.
He says he is determined that the charity should play a key role at a local level to ensure that older people in Bristol receive the high quality care and support they need.
He said: "Our older population is growing ever larger and needier. Never has the work of Age UK Bristol been more important for local older people.
"Loneliness, delayed discharges from hospitals and insufficient home support are now real issues for many.
"Government cutbacks and shrinking funds for the voluntary sector present real challenges for us, but through increased partnership working and local fundraising, we aim to provide more support for older people in Bristol and their carers.
"I hope we can mobilise more volunteers in this effort too.
"I feel really privileged to be the chair of Age UK Bristol. I live in Bristol and my aim is to help to lead Age UK Bristol to be the foremost organisation in Bristol in supporting older people."

GOP Fears 2012 Is Last Chance to Stop History
If the various expressions of right-wing hysteria that have flowered over the past three years—goldbuggery, birtherism, death panels at home and imaginary apology tours by President Obama abroad—perhaps the strain that has taken deepest root within mainstream Republican circles is the terror that the achievements of the Obama administration may be irreversible, and that the time remaining to stop permanent nightfall is dwindling away.

Come on you Reds.. err? Greens?..Arrows..Yeah "Come on you Arrows"
However I would like to suggest a subtle change.
It has become obvious that some people are so vehementally against others opinion they will red arrow them into oblivion using mutiple logins and other nefarious methods to distort the overal picture.
Popular articles polarising opinion would seemingly appear of only minor interest, when the several dozen pro clicks less the several dozen neigh clicks amounts to just one or two.
My suggestion is to show all the clicks, both red and green, which in itself will not stop targeted assasination, but will give the more deserning reader a clear indication of how many clicks got registered, not just the margin one side "won" by.

2012 Phillip Island Test WSBK Overall Times: Sykes Squeaks Ahead Of Checa
Tom Sykes took top honors on the second day of testing for the World Superbike class at Phillip Island, the Yorkshireman just nipping ahead of Althea Ducati's Carlos Checa in the early stages of the morning session to set the fastest lap of the two-day test. Though Checa was fastest again in the afternoon session, the 2011 World Champion could not get under the time set by Sykes, falling just four thousandths short.
Jakub Smrz also found a burst of speed on Tuesday morning, the Effenbert Liberty Ducati rider taking over a second off his time from Monday to end the test with the 3rd fastest time, a tenth of a second ahead of Honda's Johnny Rea. Aprilia's Max Biaggi took 5th spot after the two days of testing, just under four tenths slower than Sykes, while Marco Melandri heads into the first round of the WSBK season with the 6th fastest time. Melandri failed to improve his time on Tuesday, falling just a few hundredths short of the fastest lap he set on Monday.

Martin Freeman Joins Feature Adaptation of Cult YouTube Comedy Svengali
Production begins in London next week, Variety reports.
Svengali features real life rock stars and music biz personalities who play themselves. British stars Vicky McClure and Michael Smiley join Freeman, known for his roles as Tim Canterbury from the BBC's The Office and Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit.
"A friend of mine told me about Svengali after about the third episode," Freeman said. "When he?d described it I was actually annoyed that I hadn?t been asked to do it. I went home, watched the lot, and knew I was right to be annoyed. It was charming, sussed, and very funny."
Other cast notables include Roger Evans, Alan Mcgee, Sally Phillips, Ciaran Griffith, Michelle Gomez, Sean Harris, Colin Tiernan, Jodie Whittaker, Boy George, Maggot, Bonehead, and Carl Barat.
The feature will be directed by music video director John Hardwick, who has worked with a host of major industry figures including Blur, the Arctic Monkeys, New Order, Travis, and the Manic Street Preachers.
Writer and actor Jonny Owen will again play the reading role of Svengali. He and co-writer Dean Cavanagh created the nine-episode semi-improvised web series that debuted on YouTube in 2011.
"The web has changed everything," Owen said. "Svengali was originally an experiment to see if people wanted stories. It seems they did. To be making a movie now shows that anything is possible."
