PRISON food in Bristol has been honoured with a national award.
A scheme was brought in to improve the diet of prisoners and make them more healthy in the hope that it may also prevent them from re-offending two years ago.
It has now been praised at the Cost Sector Catering Awards.
The scheme has been led by representatives from HMP Bristol, NHS Bristol's public health team and the organisation Food Inside Out, which focuses on improving health through diet.
The prison catering team has already noted that the intake of salt, sugar and fat has been reduced in prisoners and it is hoped that they will take notice of the health improvements when they are released.
Mark Haddow, catering manager at the prison, said: "There are proven links between behaviour and diet, if we can help to reduce re-offending through prisoner diets then it's a worthy exercise.
"The work done at HMP Bristol with prisoner diets is centred on basic cooking skills and nutritional content education for prisoners."
The Cost Sector Catering Awards are considered to be the highlight of the food service and catering calendar.
Liz Fox, senior health promotion specialist for NHS Bristol said: "We have been working with HMP Bristol for two years now and using a variety of approaches we are making good progress on improving the diets of prisoners.
"We couldn't have done this without the commitment and motivation of the catering manager Mark Haddow."
