Bristol City boss Derek McInnes rues 'sloppy goals' in defeat to Brighton

BRISTOL City boss Derek McInnes made no attempt to disguise his frustration after seeing his team beaten by two sucker punches in a 2-0 defeat to Brighton on the south coast.

The Robins were undone by two set-piece routines, Dean Hammond heading in after just six minutes and Spaniard Andrea Orlandi scoring direct from another free-kick 20 minutes later.

Thereafter, Stephen Pearson hit the crossbar and fellow Robins midfielder Neil Danns saw a shot cleared off the line, but the damage had already been done.

McInnes said: "The Championship is an unforgiving place if you do not defend against free-kicks.

"I felt we gave away a few too many free-kicks near to our penalty area and invited them to put the ball in.

"The first goal has come from a free header, which is disappointing, and the second was the result of a breakdown in communication. In both cases, they were our fault.

"It is frustrating, because there was not much in the game and, for all our good play and hard work, we have come away with nothing to show for it.

"We have let in far too many goals from set-pieces this season and it is hurting us. We have conceded two very sloppy goals and you cannot get away with that in this league.

"We've had a more than decent performance and it is disappointing to have lost."

Back in the relegation zone following this defeat, City return to action at Ashton Gate when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. And McInnes insists his team can take encouragement from their latest performance, despite the final result.

He said: "There has been a huge improvement in the last three games and the players have shown a tremendous togetherness.

"What we had was a performance full of belief and commitment. We were not a team that was well beaten and gave up the ghost – we played well. This was a million miles from what we had a couple of weeks ago and we can take a lot of positives from it.

"I was pleased with the manner of the performance, but we could have asked more questions of them physically and been technically better with our shooting.

"I felt Brighton were a bit fragile and, had we scored one goal, I would have fancied us to get another. It was a strange game and Brighton never really did to us what they do to other teams. We pushed them back and forced them into playing square and, apart from the two goals, they never really hurt us."

Bristol City have signed Guernsey FC midfielder Rhys Jordan with a view to playing the teenager in their development squad.

The 18-year-old makes the move across the English Channel having been scouted in the Combined Counties League, where he played for Guernsey.

He said: "It's a dream come true. I've worked really hard to get my chance and I'm delighted to have been given this opportunity to play football at such a high level."
