Care home warned by regulator

A FISHPONDS residential home has been warned to improve its care after inspectors found issues with hygiene and cleanliness.

Regulator the Care Quality Commission found that Whitelodge Care Home in Downend Road was failing to ensure that people received appropriate and safe care or treatment.

Quality Care Homes Limited, which runs the home, has been given 14 days to reply to the CQC explaining how it will turn things around.

The regulator will also keep Whitelodge under review and is working with both Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils to ensure residents are not at risk.

A CQC report issued yesterday said that in an inspection last month communal areas were found to be unclean, with a strong smell of urine in the lounge.

Inspectors found care was not planned in a way which met the service users' individual needs and care plans did not ensure the welfare and safety of service users.

Care records had not been reviewed to assess the current needs of the people using the service and risks were not identified or managed to ensure that people received appropriate and safe care or treatment. Important health and welfare issues were not identified and followed up by the home.

Ian Biggs, deputy director of CQC in the south, said: "This warning sends a clear and public message that Quality Care Homes Limited needs to address these issues as a matter of urgency or face serious consequences.

"We note that the provider has said that it will take action. Our inspectors will keep Whitelodge care home under review.

"We will return in the near future and if we find that this care home is not making the required progress we won't hesitate to use our legal powers to protect the people who use the service."
