Teenager Long celebrates a double victory

LANSDOWN'S Joe Long, a five-handicapper became the new Gloucestershire County under-15 champion after carding an impressive 76 at Tewkesbury Park to win by three shots from Bradley Crossan (Cotswold Hills).

He is clearly a youngster in form as he also helped the county beat Wiltshire 12-3 at the Manor House, Castle Combe, with a remarkable 3 and 2 singles win by claiming six holes in a row being four down after eight holes.

Charlie Patterson (Kendleshire) won the net with 71 off a handicap of 12, two lower than eight-handicapper Josh Phillips (Players Club).

Former Somerset county player Charlie Cossins, who turned professional last year, won his first big cheque by finishing in a tie for second with Scott Fallon on eight-under-par 208 (68 67 73), two behind winner Paul Maddy (Gog Magog) in the Europro Tour event at Wychwood Park in Cheshire last week.

It was the first time he had made the cut in four tournaments and he won £3,750.

Bristol and Clifton's Paul Reed took his winnings above £16,000 for the year and is now fifth in the order of merit.

Angela Hudd and Wendy Butt from Farrington won the South West and Wales regional final of the Marie Curie seniors' betterball competition at Filton 39 points. But they will be unable to compete in the final and enjoy overnight accommodation, two rounds of golf and hospitality at Shaw Hall Hotel, Lancashire, on September 25-26 as they are on holiday.

Peter Thompson, the PGA professional who created, designed and built Farrington Golf Club which opened exactly 20 years ago, returns tonight from Bournemouth, where he is still teaching, to open the club's new Oaks restaurant that is one feature of a recent £500,000 investment project.

George Ryall (Players Club), pictured, shared 19th place in the Welsh Masters at Conwy last week after well in contention after an opening 70.

He followed with 73 and 75 to add a further £3,000 to his winnings this season in his attempt to retain a seniors' Tour card.

Gordon Brand Jnr (Players) was one shot further back with Andrew Sherborne (Kendleshire) in 38th.
