Road work paused for pipe repair

WORK to resurface a busy route out of Portishead has been suspended – because the High Street is being dug up at the same time to fix a gas leak.

North Somerset Council started work on resurfacing a section of Wyndham Way, between the Portbury Hundred and Quays Avenue, on Monday which was due to take four days to complete.

A diversion was set up along the High Street and Bristol Road for people to get on to the Portbury Hundred. And work was only being carried out between 9am and 3pm each day to avoid rush hour peaks.

But on Saturday night a gas leak was discovered outside Fowlers Florists in the High Street. It is understood the problem lies with a pipe which was repaired a couple of months ago. Part of the High Street has been dug up and traffic is being controlled by lights, causing the main thoroughfare to come to a standstill.

Traders said the closure and repair works were having an impact on trade, with people avoiding the town centre because of the congestion.

North Somerset Council agreed to suspend work on Wyndham Way in favour of repairs to the gas pipe in the High Street. North Somerset Council spokeswoman Zoe Briffitt said: "We suspended the works yesterday while Wales and West fixed the gas leak in the High Street. We will start working on Wyndham Way again today."
